The event, whose permanent home is now at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, is a unique hybrid of trade show, aviation conference, aircraft exhibit and family fair.

"We're about careers, we're about the economics of aircraft, we're about pilots and people who want to be pilots," says Nichols, estimating that each show has generated about 100 new pilots.

John Green of Canadian Aviation Expo is particularly keen to have young people attend the event. "Our focus here is on trying to get people excited about aviation, about becoming pilots, mechanics, perhaps a career in aviation," Green says.

Hamilton's Ryan Wood will offer 'flights' in a hang gliding simulator developed by his company, Instinct Windsports.
