Kris Thorne did just that with her Academic Competitions class at Twin Spruce Junior High and the group of eighth- and ninth-grade GATE students gave her a nice surprise.
Rather than make giant tape balls or use the super-sticky strips to adhere one another to the wall, the students constructed intricate and colorful pieces of fashion and even a hang glider.
“They like to take an idea and keep going,” Thorne said. “What really surprised me, I guess, were the ideas they came up with.”
Judging the wide array of inventions made by the class proved to be tough because of the variety of creative pieces. Associate Principal Dana Lyman listened while Kaige Bowles explained how his group wrapped tape over a frame made of PVC pipe to construct their hang glider. The wing of the duct tape aircraft boasts 13 colors of tape — some that people probably can not find in stores, like mirrored silver.
