Paraglider does a maneuver and hits the cliff

TORREY PINES STATE BEACH - Lifeguards rescued a man who crashed into a cliff while he was paragliding Thursday afternoon from the Torrey Pines Gliderport.

The accident was reported at 12:24 p.m., said Maurice Luque, spokesman for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

The 21-year-old man hit the cliff about 50 feet above the beach, Luque said.

Lifeguards using ropes lowered themselves to the spot where the man crashed and lowered him to the beach. He was then taken by ambulance to a hospital.

His injuries are serious but not life-threatening . The man was taken to the hospital with injuries to his ankles.
 

Luque said the man told authorities he had been "performing advanced maneuvers" when the paraglider stalled and lost altitude, then crashed.
